The Middle Mahakam Lakes covers an area about 400,000 ha, located in East Kalimantan on the Sundaland eco-region and part of the Mahakam River, which is one of the major river systems of Kalimantan. The lakes and the wetland areas are one of Kalimantan’s most important wetlands areas. It has been identified as a crucial breeding and migration site for a total of 90 bird species, including important breeding populations of various herons and the Lesser Adjutant. Fish diversity and the presence of endangered mammals such as Proboscis Monkeys, wild ox, False Gavial and Siamese Crocodile, as well as the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin indicate the importance of preservation of these areas. The preservation of these wetlands and lakes has not only a national but also international biodiversity importance in terms of migrating and breeding bird species in this area.


Day 01 ARRIVAL IN BALIKPAPAN – KOTA BANGUN – MUARA MUNTAI

Meet at airport and directly transfer to Kota Bangun for about 6 hours drive and then crossing the Semayang and Melintang Lakes for spotting the fresh water dolphins and unique life of villagers as well as the beautiful panorama of the lake. Afterwards, proceed to Muara Muntai for check in to a homestay. (L,D)


Day 02 MUARA MUNTAI – OHONG RIVER – MANCONG – MUARA MUNTAI

After breakfast, we will proceed to Mancong by motorized canoe crossing the Jempang Lake of which we will have the opportunity to view plenty of water bird species and fishermen floating houses as well as the romantic Ohong River where proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards and other wild animals are hanging around at riverside. In Mancong, we will explore an exotic longhouse and Benuaq Dayak daily life. Afterwards, proceed to Muara Muntai for overnight on homestay. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on homestay. (B,L,D)


Day 03 MUARA MUNTAI – KUYUNG – SAMARINDA

After breakfast, we will explore the exotic of Muara Muntai village with the long wooden bridge which is made of iron wood linking all the roads and alleys of the hamlet, and then proceed to Kuyung to catch the car for driving to Tenggarong town to explore the King Collection on the Museum of Mulawarman and Royal Cemetery of Kutai Kartanegara kingdom. Afterwards, driving to Samarinda for overnight on hotel. (B,L)


Day 04 SAMARINDA – DEPARTURE

Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your next destination. (B)

Mahakam River Cruise 04 Days

East Kalimantan is one of provinces in Borneo Island, also called as the Equator Pearl due to its abundant natural resources. The land offers magnificent natural beauties for visitors. One of them is the mighty Mahakam River which meanders of hundreds kilometers through one of the largest tropical rainforest in the world with twenty main Dayak sub-ethnics, once feared as headhunters settle on the river basin. Cruise the mighty river and encountering the rainforest will give you the opportunity to explore remote and unique world of the famous Dayak tribe on their harmonious life unite to the majestic nature of Borneo.


Day 01  ARRIVAL IN BALIKPAPAN – LOA JANAN – MUARA MUNTAI

Meet at airport and directly transfer to Loa Janan for boarding the houseboat to start the exciting adventure of Mahakam River. Lunch, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (L,D)


Day 02  MUARA MUNTAI – MANCONG – MAHAKAM RIVER

Arrive at Muara Muntai and sightseeing villagers daily activities from the long wooden bridge which is made of iron wood. After breakfast at houseboat, we will then walking to Museum of Mulawarman to explore the King Collection and Royal Cemetery of Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom. Afterwards, cruising downward the Mahakam River into Loa Janan and directly driving for about 2,5 hours to Balikpapan for overnight on hotel. Free at your own leisure. (B,L)

Mahakam River Cruise 05 Days

Dayak people from the overwhelming majority of the population on the hinterland live in longhouses called Umaq Daru or Lamin. It is customary for one whole extended family or even one clan settle one longhouse. Each family is given a separated compartment with the chief of the clan occupying the central chamber. The Dayak also well known for their arts, beautiful clothes making and ornaments for their longhouses. You will see and discover the culture of Dayak tribe with a lot of sub ethnics hold their own unique life combine with the diverse of flora and fauna, including the famous freshwater dolphin, proboscis monkey, black orchid, etc.

After breakfast, we will cruising up the Kedang Pahu River into Gunung Bayan while exploring wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, silvery langurs, long tailed macaque, birds, and other wild animals on riverside. We will then continue to Tebisak village for explore the daily life of Dayak and watching colorful dress dancers that welcome you with an impressive attraction in front of their longhouse. Afterwards return to houseboat for cruising downward the Mahakam River. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (B,L,D)


Day 04 TENGGARONG – BALIKPAPAN

Mahakam River Cruise 06 Days

Dayak is the indigenous people of Borneo by the Indonesian part which is known as Kalimantan. They are classified into 450 ethno-linguistic groups approximately. Despite some differences, these group share customs, physical features, architecture, language, social structure, weapons, agricultural technology and similar outlook in life. In the past, anthropologists described that the Dayak as the “legendary natives of Borneo” who live in longhouse and engaged in head-hunting, today their traditional swords “mandau” are no longer used to collect grisly trophies. Nevertheless, the Dayak is still continuing to maintain their traditional way of life and culture as the proud of their identity.

Arrive in Mancong and exploring the exotic longhouse and Benuaq Dayak daily life.  Afterwards, return to houseboat for cruising upward the river into Muara Pahu. Day 03 MUARA PAHU – KEDANG PAHU RIVER – MELAK

After breakfast, we will cruising up the Kedang Pahu River into Gunung Bayan while exploring wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, silvery langurs, long tailed maccaque, birds, and other wild animals on riverside. We will then continue to Tebisak village for explore the daily life of Dayak and watching colorful dress dancers that welcome you with an impressive attraction in front of their longhouse. Day 04 MELAK – EHENG – KERSIK LUWEY – MAHAKAM RIVER

Arrive at Melak and directly transfer to Eheng village for visiting an old and impressive longhouse with its unique ornament and shape while exploring the Tunjung Dayak daily life. Next, we will drive to Kersik Luwey reserve for observing the rare black orchid and other flora on the zone. Afterwards return to houseboat for cruising downward the Mahakam River. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on houseboat. (B,L,D)


Day 05 TENGGARONG – BALIKPAPAN

After breakfast at houseboat, we will then walking to Museum of Mulawarman to explore the King Collection and Royal Cemetery of Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom. Afterwards, cruising down to Loa Janan as the last part of the Mahakam River Cruise and directly driving for about 2,5 hours to Balikpapan for overnight on hotel. Free at your own leisure. (B,L)
