BORNEO ORANGUTAN TOURS

Samboja Orangutan Tours

Duration: 03 Days/02 Nights

Grade: Easy

Reforestation is the core of the Samboja Lestari project with hundreds of indigenous species planted. By the middle of 2006 more than 740 different tree species were planted, not yet including the special collections in the arboretum. This huge and worldwide unmatched biological diversity in a project starting from scratch is already supporting hundreds of animal species, including nine species of primate, of which 8 showed up spontaneously in this quiet refuge of food rich greenery.

The Samboja Lestari program focuses on fruit tree species in order to develop a wildlife sanctuary in the near future, especially for the orangutans. Actually many of the trees were grown from the seeds extracted from the excrements of free roaming orangutans therefore a guarantee that they will support orangutans and other wildlife. The carrying capacity of the Samboja Lestari area for wildlife will be many times greater than the natural forest. Planting of other tree species increases the biodiversity of the area and also benefits research activities and helps the local communities.

Wild Orangutan & Dayak Explore

Duration: 06 Days/05 Nights

Grade: Easy

Orangutan means man of forest, this Asian ape is indeed truly a tree-dweller (arboreal). Recent genetic evidence has led to the re-classification of Bornean and Sumatran orangutans as separate species: Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii respectively. Orangutans have distinctive body shapes with very long arms that may reach up to 2m in length. They have a coarse, shaggy reddish coat and grasping hands and feet. They are highly sexually dimorphic, with adult males being distinguished by their large size, throat pouch and flanges on either side of the face, known as cheek pads. Orangutans are particularly sensitive to habitat encroachment. The largest fruit eaters on earth require an extensive territory about 500 hectares per adult. Because fruit trees are widely dispersed in the rainforest, orangutan can not survive in groups, which would quickly deplete the trees. They are supplemented by bark, shoot, flowers, insect and honey. The orangutans’ great weight prevents them from foraging over long distances. They mostly travel only some 400 meters a day. Males live a solitary life while the females keep one or two youngsters nearby, chasing their offspring away when the children reach about four years of age. Every evening, each adult builds a temporary overnight nest high in tree.

Borneo Ancient Culture & Orangutan Tours

Duration: 07 Days/06 Nights

In prehistoric times, orangutans lived throughout Asia, roaming as far north as China. Most of the land was then covered with huge continuous rainforest areas and the orangutans could roam freely over large distances. Currently, orangutans are only found in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and little part of Sumatra, even though the fossils have been found in Java, Vietnam and China. They are the only surviving species in the genus Pongo and the subfamily Ponginae which also includes the extinct genera Gigantopithecus and Sivapithecus of Sumatera and Borneo. In the deep of Borneo Island, we can also found the remains of Prehistoric Rock Art on caves. The Rock Art painting shows communication between the world of the living and the worlds of the spirits, and gives insight in to the cosmology of prehistoric hunters and gatherers. There is an exceptionally high number of ‘tattoo’ handprints, composing handprints, unique human figures and fascinating representations of prehistoric social life, dancing, hunting, and rituals.
