The Salikung Jungle River is located in Muara Uya Sub-district of Tabalong Regency, the Northernmost of South Kalimantan province. To reach the area, travelers need to drive to Binjai Village passing Tanjung town and then continued by motorized boat for about 90 minutes to reach Salikung Village, the gateway to this jungle river. This Borneo jungle river has its own charm with the natural canopy shaped from various vegetation of primary forest at the riverside. It is also fascinating for a wildlife exploration with great opportunity to spot group of proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaques, binturong, species of birds, monitor lizards, snakes, and other wildlife that hang around the riverside. The upper part of the river is shallower with large limestone wall that makes the boating is more challenging by crossing through the limestone.


Day 01 ARRIVAL IN PALANGKA RAYA – SEBANGAU NATIONAL PARK – HOTEL

Arrive at Palangka Raya airport with morning flight and directly transfer to Kereng Bangkirai port to start our Borneo Jungle River Tours by crossing the Sebangau Lake into a narrow creek to reach Sungai Koran camp which is part of the Sebangau National Park. Arrive at the camp and prepare for trekking into rainforest to explore endemic vegetation and hoping to spot the wild animals such as; orangutans, hornbills, proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards, and other wildlife. Next, proceed to climb the tower for exploring the beautiful peat swamp forest landscape from above. Afterwards, return to Kereng Bangkirai port to catch our car driving to hotel in Palangka Raya for overnight. (L,D)


Day 02 PALANGKA RAYA – ORANGUTAN ISLAND – TAMIYANG LAYANG

After breakfast, we will proceed to Tangkiling port for catching our motorized canoe to reach the Orangutan Island while sightseeing the romantic river and rainforest around, just keep an eye out for monkeys and birds. The Orangutan Island is managed by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) for orangutan rehabilitation before releasing to the wild. Afterwards, driving accross beautiful landscape of peat swamp forest to reach Tamiyang Layang town for staying overnight at local hotel. (B,L,D)


Day 03 TAMIYANG LAYANG – BLACK ORCHID – JUNGLE RIVER– SALIKUNG FOREST

After breakfast, we will proceed to Paju Epat district for a soft trekking in the protected forest to explore the rare black orchid, pitcher plants, and other vegetation. Afterwards, we will drive to Binjai village to catch the motorized boat for boating across the jungle river to reach Salikung forest. Just keep an eye out for the flora and fauna of the jungle such as; wild orchids, big trees, flowering plants, proboscis monkeys, black leaf monkeys, long tailed maccaque, gibbons, monitor lizards, and species of birds. We will then setting our campsite on the riverside. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on the campsite. (B,L,D)


Day 04 SALIKUNG FOREST – JUNGLE RIVER – LOKSADO

Breakfast at the camp and then trekking to explore the atmosphere of the jungle with its fascinating flora and fauna. We will then proceed to the beautiful waterfall and swimming in the fresh water of the jungle. In the afternoon, we will cross downward the jungle river into Binjai village to catch our car for driving to Loksado for overnight on lodge. (B,L,D)


Day 05 BAMBOO RAFTING – BANJARMASIN

After breakfast at lodge, we will do a soft trekking to Dayak village for exploring the longhouse, rainforest, and the waterfall nearby the village. Afterwards, we will take an adventure trip of bamboo rafting across beautiful landscape of tropical rainforest along the Amandit riverside meanwhile our coach will be waiting on the downstream for transferring to Banjarmasin for overnight on hotel. Day 06 FLOATING MARKET – DEPARTURE

Early in the morning, we will leave to floating market for exploring the unique culture of Banjarese that trade commodities from boat to boat, then return to hotel crossing Banjarmasin River while sightseeing people activities at riverside. Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your flight to next destination. (B)

The Mighty Barito River is more than eight hundred kilometers long with a drainage basin of 100,000 square kilometers, and almost 5 kilometers wide at its mouth become the lifeblood for hundreds of thousands of people. It originates in the Muller Mountain Range which is called as the Heart of Borneo, from where it flows southward into the Java Sea. Its main affluent is the Martapura River and it passes through the city of Banjarmasin. Along its length is found a huge array of cultures, commerce, habitats and wildlife, as it flows through cities and jungles, around mines and fields. This mighty river crossing through the jungle, mountain, cliffs and valleys, old tribes with rich cultures, villages and cities, and every kind of plant and animals that Kalimantan has to offer, including the ten different primate species.


Day 01 ARRIVAL IN PALANGKA RAYA – SABANGAU NATIONAL PARK – HOTEL

Day 02 PALANGKA RAYA – ORANGUTAN ISLAND – BATILAP

After breakfast, we will drive to Tangkiling port for catching our motorized canoe to reach the Orangutan Island while sightseeing the romantic river and rainforest around, just keep an eye out for monkeys and birds. The Orangutan Island is managed by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) for orangutan rehabilitation before releasing to the wild. Afterwards, proceed to Betung for about 4,5 hours driving across pristine lowland forest and peat swamp landscape. Arrive at Betung and directly crossing the Barito River and Black Puning River to reach Batilap village for overnight on floating or stilt house of local people. (B,L,D)


Day 03 BATILAP – BLACK PUNING RIVER

After breakfast, we will be trekking into the jungle to explore wild orangutans and other wildlife such as birds, sun bears, gibbons, as well as various vegetation of Borneo. In the peaceful afternoon, we will cruise deeper the Black Puning River where the wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, long tail macaques, birds and others are usually showing up. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on campsite on riverside. (B,L,D)


Day 04 BLACK PUNING RIVER – BUNTAL RIVER – BLACK ORCHID – LOKSADO

After breakfast, we will be crossing under the canopy of the romantic Buntal River where birds, proboscis monkeys, long tail macaques, monitor lizards and other wild animals are hanging around the riverside, and then continue our trip by visiting Sanggu village to explore black orchid and other species. Afterwards, proceed to Loksado for overnight at lodge. (B,L,D)


Day 05 BAMBOO RAFTING – SUNGAI RUTAS – BANJARMASIN

After breakfast at lodge, we will do a soft trekking to Dayak village for exploring the longhouse, rainforest, and the waterfall nearby the village and then continue the trip by taking the adventure trip of bamboo rafting across beautiful landscape of tropical rainforest along the Amandit riverside meanwhile our coach will be waiting on the downstream for transferring to Sungai Rutas village across the fascinating swampy and lowland landscape. Arrive in the village and getting our boat to cruise the romantic river for spotting wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaque, silvery langurs, birds, monitor lizards, and other wild animals on the riverside as well as the daily activities of local people. Day 06 FLOATING MARKET – DEPARTURE

The Lesan River Protected Zone is home to almost 1,800 people, it is located in Kelay sub-district and surrounded by four villages; Muara Lesan, Lesan Dayak, Merapun, and Sidobangen. To reach the place, travelers must start from Berau town by car to Muara Lesan and then taking around 90 minutes boat trip along the Kelay River to Lesan River. While boating, travelers will be fascinated by the beautiful natural scenery, gyrating waves breaking on the boat’s bows, and large hornbills soaring overhead. The region also offers water activities such as rafting along rapids or just a jungle river boating to watch primates and birds. Travelers can also enjoy the adventure journey by exploring limestone mountain caves through waterways, observe countless bats and swallows, as well cave lakes and waterfalls sightseeing. Day 01 ARRIVAL IN BERAU – MERABU VILLAGE

Meet at airport and directly driving across rainforest and mountainous landscape to reach Merabu Dayak Village for staying overnight at a homestay. In the afternoon, we can explore and interacting with the Dayak people. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and staying overnight at homestay. (L,D)


Day 02 MERABU VILLAGE – BELOYOT CAVE – NYADENG LAKE

After breakfast, we will trek through rainforest for about 2 hours to visit the ancient cave of prehistoric rock art that can be seen from the exotic handprints and paintings. During our trek, we may have opportunity to spot or hearing the sounds of hornbills, gibbons, macaques, insects, etc. Afterwards, proceed to the village to catch our boat to cross the Lesan River to Nyadeng jetty to start our trekking into the beautiful clearwater lake for swimming with fish and setting our campsite. Lunch will be served at homestay, dinner and staying overnight at campsite. (B,L,D)


Day 03 NYADENG LAKE – KETEPU HILL – MERABU VILLAGE – MERASA VILLAGE

Early morning, we will trek up the Ketepu hill into the peak and watching the fantastic view of the misty Sangkulirang karst range and rainforest from above. We will have opportunity to spot magnificent hornbills and other bird species flying around the karst. Trekking down to the camp and refresh your body by swimming in the clearwater lake. Next, trekking back to Nyadeng jetty to catch our boat crossing down the river into Merabu Village. Afterwards, proceed to Merasa Village for overnight at local house. (B,L,D)


Day 04 MERASA VILLAGE – ORANGUTAN ISLAND – LESAN VILLAGE

Breakfast at homestay and then proceed to Bawan Orangutan Island to explore the rehabilitated orangutans from our boat. Afterwards, continue the river cruising to reach Lesan Dayak Village while sightseeing the wildlife on riverside. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and staying overnight at local house. (B,L,D)


Day 05 JUNGLE TREKKING – LESAN VILLAGE

After breakfast at local house, we will trek to the jungle to spot wild orangutan and other wildlife. We will then getting our boat crossing the Lesan Jungle River to explore the beautiful karst, vegetation, and the wildlife on riverside. Afterwards, proceed back to the village for overnight at local house. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and staying overnight at local house. (B,L,D)


Day 06 LESAN VILLAGE  – BERAU

Breakfast at local house and exploring the way of life of Dayak people before driving back to Berau town for check in to hotel. Lunch and dinner will be served on local restaurants, staying overnight at hotel in Berau. (B,L,D)

Borneo Jungle River Tours IV

Duration: 11 Days/10 Nights

The second largest river in Indonesia, the Mighty Mahakam is at once a major highway, a cultural tour and a wildlife spotting expedition. It is also the only major river with public transportation all the way into the heart of Borneo, making its 930 kilometers length entirely accessible. Travelling up this jungle river is a journey in the fullest sense of the word. One heads away from the industrial center of Samarinda and slips deeper and deeper into the jungle, and into Borneo’s past. There are many opportunities for exploration, from towns and longhouses to huge lakes, wetlands and jungle rivers. This is a place that rewards travelers with time on their hands and hence the ability to jump off the boat and wait for the next one, even if it means staying overnight. This is off the beaten track travel of the highest order. Outside the summer season, you will probably not see another foreigner on your entire trip.


Day 01 ARRIVAL IN BALIKPAPAN – KOTA BANGUN – MUARA MUNTAI

Meet at airport and directly transfer to Kota Bangun for about 6 hours drive and then crossing the Semayang and Melintang Lakes for spotting the fresh water dolphins and unique life of villagers as well as the beautiful panorama of the lake. Day 02 MUARA MUNTAI – OHONG RIVER – TANJUNG ISUY – MELAK

After breakfast, we will explore the exotic of Muara Muntai village with the long wooden bridge which is made of iron wood linking all the roads and alleys of the hamlet. Next, proceed to Mancong by motorized canoe crossing the Jempang Lake of which we will have the opportunity to view plenty of water bird species and fishermen floating houses as well as the romantic Ohong River where proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards and other wild animals are hanging around at riverside. In Mancong, we will explore an exotic longhouse and Benuaq Dayak daily life. Afterwards, proceed to Tanjung Isuy to catch our car for driving to Melak for overnight at local hotel. (B,L,D)


Day 03 MELAK – KERSIK LUWEY – TERING– LONG BAGUN

After breakfast, we will proceed to Kersik Luwey reserve for observing the rare black orchid and other flora on the zone. Next, driving to Eheng village for visiting an old and impressive longhouse with its unique ornament and shape while exploring the Tunjung Dayak daily life. Afterwards, transfer to Tering port to catch the public speedboat crossing upward the Mahakam River to reach Long Bagun for staying overnight at homestay. In the afternoon, we can explore the beautiful longhouse of Penihing Dayak and the daily life of local people. (B,L,D)


Day 04 LONG BAGUN – MAHAKAM HEADWATERS – TIONG OHANG

Get a full day trip by public boat to cruise the headwaters of Mahakam River through amazing rapids while sightseeing beautiful view of rainforest and waterfall as well as people unique activities at riverside. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight at homestay. (B,L,D)


Day 05 TIONG OHANG – MAHAKAM HEADWATERS – LONG APARI

After breakfast at homestay, we will get motorized canoe crossing the Mahakam headwaters to reach Long Apari, the last village in Mahakam River. On the way, we can enjoy the magnificent panorama of dense tropical forest and wildlife on riverside. In the afternoon, we can explore the daily life of Dayak people and long eared woman with tattoos if we are lucky. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight at local house. (B,L,D)


Day 06 JUNGLE TREKKING

After breakfast at local house, we will be trekking in the heart of Borneo crossing rivers, hills, rocks, and wilderness. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight at campsite on riverside. (B,L,D)


Day 07 JUNGLE TREKKING – MAHAKAM HEADWATERS – TIONG OHANG

After breakfast at the campsite, we will be trekking down to the village and boarding the boat for crossing downward the Mahakam headwaters into Tiong Ohang for check in to homestay. (B,L,D)


Day 08 TIONG OHANG – MAHAKAM HEADWATERS – LONG BAGUN

After breakfast, we will then boarding the public boat for crossing downward the Mahakam headwaters into Long Bagun. On the way, we will enjoy the beautiful view of rainforest, rock, waterfall, and wildlife on riverside. Arrive at Long Bagun and directly check in to homestay. (B,L,D)


Day 09 LONG BAGUN – MAHAKAM RIVER

Breakfast at homestay, then downward the Mahakam River by public houseboat, here you can explore the local people way of life, the riverside civilization that certainly different with our normal life on the land. The houseboat is a public traditional wooden boat with two decks, the first deck for carrying goods and economy class with capacity about 100 passengers and the second deck is for executive class with capacity of 75 passengers. The economy room is more open both sides and no mattress while the executive served mattress, with communal room, no cabin and no AC. At the back side, there are some Borneo style toilets and simple restaurant providing Indonesian food, tea, coffee, and snacks on the first deck. The boat will stop sometimes to pick and drop passengers or loading some supplies. Lunch, dinner and overnight on the houseboat. (B,L,D)


Day 10 MAHAKAM RIVER – SAMARINDA – BALIKPAPAN

At the second day on the houseboat, we will cruise the lower Mahakam River into Samarinda while sightseeing people unique activities at riverside. Arrive at Samarinda and directly driving to Balikpapan for check in to a hotel.  (B,L,D)
